My
name is Amanda. I’m an at-home mom who likes to blog about motherhood to make
sense of a career that comes with no job description. I have three children, Kellen, Gwyneth and Malcolm.
My
husband’s name is Drew. He’s a family doctor, but he hates when I lead with
that, so I will also say that he is the king of “dad jokes” and has been since
long before we had kids.
We
also have a bouncy chocolate lab named Rocky who has an affinity for destroying
throw pillows; one may say he’s a minimalist. I feel the need to include him
here as he is a far greater challenge to keep alive and entertained than the
kids.
I
have a bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a master’s degree in Occupational
Therapy. My degrees hang prominently on the wall to pleasantly remind me on my
best mom days that I chose to be at-home over other careers and alternatively,
on my worst mom days that I have options other than running away or murder.
Despite
being born and raised on a dairy farm down a dirt road in southwestern Ontario,
I find myself raising my own family surrounded by sidewalks, next-door
neighbours, transit and convenience stores. Life as a parent is different in
the city; not only do I have to buy milk at the grocery store and pick up dog poop
like a sucker, but aside from the occasional unlucky squirrel, there are far
fewer opportunities for “circle of life” discussions with the kids.
I
strongly believe that while parenthood may look different on everyone, underneath
each mom or dad’s unique breed of chaos lies a collective of people who are
joined together by the simple fact that while we sometimes look like we know what
we’re doing, more often than not, we haven’t got a clue.
It
is my hope that each of you find something you can relate to in my ramblings
even if it’s just to know that you’re not the only mum (or dad) writing the
book as you go.
